General dentistry involves all the most common and frequently performed treatments in dentistry. At Birmingham Dental, Dr. Sgalia and Dr. Coburn are experienced, available dentistry specialists. If you want to keep your teeth healthy to last you a lifetime, it is essential to receive oral health care services from dental professionals.
At our Birmingham, MI dental office, we serve all residents in Birmingham and other surrounding cities. We recommend that each person receives dental care from a dental professional at least twice a year.
Treatments and Procedures
Below we have listed some of the available dental treatments and procedures we perform each day in our office.
At-Home Oral Care
In addition to in-office preventative care procedures at Birmingham Dental Center, we also encourage our patients to practice good oral hygiene at home. One way to practice oral hygiene at home is to brush, floss, and use mouthwash twice a day. You can remove debris and plaque from your teeth with an excellent oral hygiene routine, preventing dental decay and other dental concerns.
At Birmingham Dental Center, we recommend brushing with a low-abrasive, fluoridated toothpaste with a soft-bristle toothbrush. The low-abrasive toothpaste is strong enough to remove debris from your teeth without damaging your teeth or gums. Additionally, the fluoridated toothpaste helps strengthen the outer layer of your tooth, the enamel. Call our office for more information about the best way to care for your teeth at home.
Routine Cleanings and Examinations
Along with brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day, we highly recommend that you see the dentist for a professional cleaning and examination twice a year. Each cleaning involves removing plaque and tartar, polishing and brushing the teeth with a high-powered instrument, and then complete flossing.
Once we have completed the cleaning, one of our dentists will examine your teeth. Our examinations diagnose any existing problems or decay within your teeth. Cleanings and examinations are an excellent way to prevent dental issues.
Fillings
If decay is detected and there is a need for repair, we may recommend a filling. A filling consists of us removing a cavity through a dental drill. Removing all existing decay is essential for the tooth to heal and function again. After removing the decay, we sanitize the tooth, prepping the area. A tooth-colored composite resin material is then inserted and hardened.
Gingivitis Treatment
The beginning stage of periodontal disease is called gingivitis. Gingivitis is the only stage of the disease that can be corrected and completely cured. Our hygienists will remove all buildup on the gum line to promote gum healing.
Dental Sealants
Sealants are for children and adults who would like extra help preventing cavities on the back and chewing teeth. Our back molars are the teeth most commonly infected by decay due to deep pits where food and plaque can get stuck. A sealant is made of a liquid, plastic material that, when hardened, seals off the deep parts of the tooth.
Fluoride Varnish
Fluoride is a natural mineral found to strengthen the enamel of the tooth. After a routine visit, we encourage our patients to take advantage of our varnish to help them prevent cavities and decay.
Patients can also find fluoride in different kinds of toothpaste and some water. We encourage patients to use fluoridated products but be mindful and not use an excessive amount.
